Public Art in Pensacola Flourishes with New Mural on The Zarzaur Law Building.

Across the country, cities large and small are inspired to bring life to city walls with thoughtful color and design. Local artists have been turning city walls into huge public canvases and the results of their labor can have a lasting effect on the local community. Research has shown that murals provide social, cultural and economic benefits. Murals offer accessibility to art and creative expression without the cost and perceived barriers of traditional galleries or museums. Murals can act as a starting point that can lead to interest in seeing more work inside and outside of gallery spaces. In Pensacola, there has been an ongoing creative renaissance and two local artists wanted to contribute to the the growing excitement of murals in the area.

A more than nine month project came to life in March 2019 for artists Veronique Zayas of Hatchmark Studio and Somi Choi of idgroup. Their “Call for a Wall” project is a gift to the city. Zayas and Choi first announced the “Call for a Wall” on social media to find a Downtown Pensacola business with a wall that would serve as the canvas for a piece that would be a a point of interest and destination in downtown for both tourists and locals alike. Zarzaur Law, P.A. answered the call and offered up their wall for this locally focused and positive mural. Zarzaur Law, P.A., a personal injury law firm lead by Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer Joe Zarzaur, has always been a supporter of the arts and was honored to be chosen as the business and canvas for the mural.

The process took time since they were asking to paint on a historic downtown building, but approval by the Pensacola City Council provided the final steps in bringing the vision and mural to life.

The mural took 3 days to complete and truly ended up being even more beautiful than envisioned. Within the first 5 minutes of the mural’s completion people were lined up to take photos as well as selfies in front of the mural.

The mural incorporates colors that represent positivity, energy and Pensacola’s beautiful sunshine and water. The welcoming message “Wish You Were Here” intertwined with the word Pensacola provides a postcard moment that everyone will be proud to share. The mural is planned to be on display for up to 12 months on The Zarzaur Law building at the corner of Palafox and Romana streets in Pensacola, Florida.

PENSACOLA, Fla. (Mar. 6, 2019) — Zarzaur Law, P.A., a personal injury law firm based out of Pensacola, Florida, in partnership with local artists Veronique Zayas and Somi Choi, will begin the painting of the new mural that is a part of the “Call for a Wall” project. Zayas and Choi sent out a “Call for a Wall” in hopes of collaborating with a local Downtown Pensacola business that had an outside wall that could provide the canvas for this mural. Zarzaur Law offered up the North facing wall on the outside of its building at 100 South Palafox, located at the corner of Romana and Palafox Streets in Downtown Pensacola.

Watch the video of the announcement of the project from 2018.

Painting of this mural on The Zarzaur Building will commence on Friday, March 15, at 9:30pm at the conclusion of Zarzaur Law’s “Legal Graffiti” fundraiser during the March Gallery Night event. The artists will be painting throughout the weekend with the final mural ready for photos, selfies and documentation on Monday, March 18.

“Anything that will help Pensacola is always something the firm wants to be a part of, and the fact that it involves beautiful art is a great bonus.” said Joe Zarzaur, owner and partner at Zarzaur Law, P.A.

Veronique Zayas of HatchMark Studio, Somi Choi of idgroup and Zarzaur Law, P.A. wanted to contribute to the growing excitement around murals and public art in the Pensacola community.  Veronique Zayas and Somi Choi are the artists and idea generators.

“Imagine driving down Palafox and being greeted with a large-scale, bold and bright Pensacola-focused saying,” said Veronique Zayas, “Something that is shared repeatedly across Instagram and other social channels – that local residents and tourists can snap a shot in front of.”

This locally focused mural will be a positive “point of interest” and a destination within Downtown Pensacola for both visitors and locals alike. It is planned to be on display for up to 12 months.

How Do Low Income Residents Afford Lawyers for Non-Criminal Offenses?

Our Pensacola News Journal recently featured an Associated Press article addressing Florida’s consideration of a new law which would permit legal aid to persons in certain types of civil cases.

Many people (including myself at one point) assumed that if you could not afford a lawyer and your rights were at stake then “one would be provided for you.”  Well, that’s accurate but only in criminal cases.

So, if your child is at risk of being taken from you, you have been involuntarily committed for substance abuse or perhaps your home is being taken from you via a foreclosure action, you are pretty much on your own.  In fact, the article notes that about 80% of low-income people who are in civil legal trouble do not have representation.

Thankfully, there are organizations like the Northwest Florida Legal Services (now known as Emerald Coast Legal Aid) who are in the business of providing legal services in civil (non-criminal cases) to those that can not afford an lawyer for such critical issues like child custody and foreclosure.  Many times this civil legal issues disproportionally affect women and children who are much more likely to not have sufficient funds to pay for a lawyer of their own.  However, these fantastic organizations like Emerald Coast Legal Aid are funded as non-profits and rely on donations and grants from government programs at both the state and federal levels.

It appears that finally the legislature in our state is considering some funding for these legal aid organizations to assist in compensating lawyers of indigent clients who are facing such critical issues as child custody and foreclosure.

“Yesterday, we had the pleasure of accepting a check from the gang at Zarzaur Law, P.A., from their Legal Graffiti donations during Downtown Pensacola Gallery Night. Thank you Pensacola. Your donation helps us continue our work providing high quality civil legal services to low-income residents, abused spouses or children and the elderly, residing in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, Florida.”

In 2011 Zarzaur Law, P.A. of Pensacola, FL adopted Emerald Coast Legal Aid (then Northwest Florida Legal Services) as the permanent benefactor of the firm’s “Legal Graffiti” and have since raised and donated several thousand dollars to that worthy organization and its wonderful staff.  Since this new initiative is running the halls in Tallahassee we urge everyone in Florida to reach out and show your support for this new law.

I would also be neglectful if I also did not mention the huge contribution that local and state bar associations do through their pro-bono programs that assist with this dilemma.  However, as you can see from the 80% figure of unrepresented litigants, we have a long way to go and these new laws should help.
