Zarzaur Law’s Triathlon Team Captain: Racing For Her Most Important Cause

Laura Brewer has been a member of the Zarzaur Law Triathlon team since its inception nine years ago and currently serves as the team captain. Laura truly believes in the mission of the team and the firm: to be good ambassadors for the triathlon sport and to support its two charities, Favor House and Gulf Coast Kids’ House.

When I race, I look for others who may need encouraging words and try to uplift them.

Laura and her husband began racing in triathlons in 2012 when they first started dating. They’ve done several 70.3 Ironmans® together as well as a 140.6. In March 2022, Dale was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his kidney. The right kidney and tumor had to be removed, and he will likely not be able to do long distance racing ever again.

On Sunday, July 24, 2022, Laura raced for Dale. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he insisted that she continue to train and race for the Ohio 70.3 Ironman® that they intended to do together. She did, in fact, race for her most important cause—her husband.

The journey to this point wasn’t easy, and the race presented some challenges that mirrored Dale’s journey.

“He loves racing, especially Ironman events. For him to be there cheering knowing that he can’t be out there breaks me to the core. But it is a reminder to never take for granted what we CAN do.”

“I was hoping to set a PR for this race for Dale also. I did 5:05 last October. But race conditions were a little tougher with winds and water conditions, and my new disc brakes on my bike were rubbing during the ride. I didn’t realize it until we got my bike at the end and my wheel was not turning well. I think this matched Dale’s journey with his health, so I think I was meant to overcome more. ”

Her time was 5:29 and she finished 55th overall female out of approximately 500. Laura believes it was not her fastest time, but we think this race was way more than just about her time and her placement.

“When I race, I look for others who may need encouraging words and try to uplift them. The triathlon community is one of the best because of the camaraderie. I also feel so proud to represent Zarzaur Law, P.A. because of the amazing person and attorney Joe really is, and I firmly believe in what he does in our community. He looks to make a difference. Dale and I are truly grateful for his ongoing encouragement and support, because that is what life is about.”

Laura remembers being that first-time triathlete who was so nervous and unsure. Having others around her to motivate her and encourage her is what made her fall in love with the sport. She loves to give that energy back. She truly does embody that statement. You can find her (and Dale) cheering on and encouraging every competitor at every race, as well as being a mentor and volunteer at all of the kids’ duathlon and triathlons and Zarzaur Law’s Legal Graffiti fundraiser events.

“No matter what happens, take pride that you have the ability to do this. Race for yourself and for someone who can’t. Most importantly, remember that you’ve got this!”

1. School You Are Attending And What Year Of Law School Are You In?

Florida State University College of Law & Rising 2L.

2. What Area Of Law Are You Interested In Pursuing? When Did You Know You Wanted To Be A Lawyer?

I am interested in litigation practice, I am not sure which area, in particular, I would like to practice; however, I do have a slight interest in business litigation, but also an interest in personal injury as it allows me to help others who have been wronged. Growing up I always had an interest in being a lawyer. My dad was a police officer when I was young which sparked my interest in law, so from a young age, I was able to somewhat learn about criminal law.

3. What Do You Hope To Learn While Interning At Zarzaur Law, P.A.?

I would like to gain a more practical understanding of litigation and sharpen those needed skills so that I can become the best lawyer possible.

4. Why Did You Choose Zarzaur Law, P.A.?

I chose Zarzaur Law because of the firm’s strong reputation and because of all of the lawyers’ experience, both in and out of the courtroom, which provides an amazing learning opportunity.

5. Name Some Of Your Top Achievements Thus Far

8. Why Do You Love / Like Pensacola?

What I like about being in Pensacola is that I have an opportunity to see all of my family and the beach here is one of a kind.

9. Best Piece Of Advice That You Have Ever Received? (By Who?)

Not to compare yourself to others. I have found this is especially important in the competitive law school environment where you have to trust your study habits and work product rather than try to imitate others.

10. What Are Your Reading?

I am not currently reading anything for pleasure.

Pensacola Triathlon Team Recruitment

ZL_gavel_invitation

Are you interested in possibly becoming a part of the Zarzaur Law Triathlon team?

Zarzaur Law is looking to add new members from the local Pensacola area for the 2018 triathlon season. Candidates must be good ambassadors for endurance sports, be community and philanthropic minded, filled with courage and motivation, and possess the drive to be the best YOU can be.

Currently, the Gavel Team is in search of women and men who exemplify the following characteristics:

  1. Men and women who are good ambassadors for endurance sports. When the word ambassador pops up, many people think we’re looking for people who owned the top steps of the podiums. While being fast is awesome and several of our athletes are incredibly fast, that, in and of itself, is not what it takes. The Zarzaur Law Tri Team is looking for triathletes that want to live lifestyles of health, fitness and truly love endurance sports. We’re looking for people who try to give a word of encouragement to others who are on the course, road, water or trail. And lastly, race to the absolute best of your ability on that day but, congratulate others even when things don’t go according to plan.
  2. Philanthropic and community focused individuals. The Zarzaur Law Tri Team focuses extracurricular time on community events and charities. In addition to volunteering at races, The Gavel Team encourages our members to give back to the community by supporting, through The Gavel Team or on an individual basis, organizations that promote safety, health and fitness. Below is a list of organizations we believe can benefit from the knowledge, experience, and resources, of The Gavel Team and our members. In particular, The Gavel Team supports Favor House and the Gulf Coast Kids House. This includes several required events and fundraisers for one charity each season.
  3. As a reminder, we’re looking for good athletes who will represent Zarzaur Law, P.A. and the triathlon team. You do NOT need to be an elite athlete, you only need to have the courage and motivation to strive to be the best you can.

If interested, please submit your letter of interest. This letter should include why you meet the characteristics listed above, why you would be a good team member and your prior triathlete or triathlete related experience. Please email your submission to info@zarzaurlaw.com by December 10, 2017.

Spotlight on Zarzaur Law Staff: Dianna Ta

Personal Injury LawyerDianna and Zarzaur Law

My favorite project at Pensacola Personal Injury Law Firm, Zarzaur Law, has been preparing for Trial. Seeing the entire Pensacola Law Firm team working diligently for weeks really made me inspired to see what lawyers and their employees go through when they have such an important case to try.

About Dianna Ta

The best vacation I’ve ever been on has to be a cross country road trip from Florida to Colorado. It took my boyfriend & I three days, and trading in beaches for mountains was the best part.

My favorite quote has to be “Just do it” -Nike. No excuses. Literally, just do it.

If I could eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would have to be sushi.

On my days off, I like to run, take my dog on walks, explore coffee shops, watch my favorite shows, and go to the beach. My first concert was Kenny Chesney back in elementary school.

My favorite TV show has to be “The Office”.

My favorite thing to do in Pensacola has to be hammock-ing at the beach. My favorite place to eat has to be Fuji’s in Gulf Breeze and Four Seasons in Downtown Pensacola. I

was originally born in San Bernardino, California but my family moved to Pensacola when I was only a few months old so this is where I was raised and consider it to be my hometown.

I’d like to travel around Asia, Australia Europe, and many major cities in the United States including Northern California, Hawaii, and any northern state past Virginia.
